Seven years gaol for robbery
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. John Murray Tutnaru, aged 26, was imprisoned for seven years for aggravated robbery, and Warren Reece Eyles, aged 22, was imprisoned for five years on the same' charge, when sentenced by Mr Justice Beattie in the Supreme Court at Wellington today. Both men had pleaded guilty to charges that, armed with an offensive weapon, a sawn-off shotgun, they assaulted Gerald Joseph Paris with intent to rob him, and broke into a sports shop at Raetihi. Tumaru also pleaded guilty to wilfully discharging a firearm in a public place with reckless disregard for William Andrew Bell and another. Armed robbery was relatively rare in New Zealand, but when it did occur it must be met by a severe penalty, his Honour said. His Honour commended Mr Paris, a Cuba Street jeweller, for his courage in resisting the accused when he was robbed at gunpoint, and also other publicspirited citizens, including several young persons, who at risk to themselves had pursued the two offenders.
