FACTORY NOISE
legislation proposed (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. The Government proposed this session to introduce an amendment to the Factories Act to provide for the protection of persons exposed to the harmful effects of noise in factories, the Minister of Labour (Mr Marshall) said today. “This will require effective steps to be taken to prevent persons from being exposed to noise which is likely to cause damage to their hearing,” he told Parliament.
Where such measures were not practicable, the occupiei of the factory would be required to provide personal ear ~ protection of an approved type, Mr Marshall said. The Minister’s comments came in reply to a question from Mr M. A. Connelly (Lab., Wigram) asking if action was planned along the lines suggested by Professor D. C. Stevenson, who had said that standards for noise abatement and legislation prescribing reasonable noise levels were needed. Mr Marshall said that as there was not general agreement among authorities as to what was an acceptable sound level in all industrial processes and activities, it was not proposed at present to prescribe sound levels as suggested by Professor Stevenson.
