Mrs King has an easy win

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK. The top seed, Mrs B. J. King, advanced easily to the second round of the United States Open tennis championships at Forest Hills by defeating the veteran, Miss J. Arth, also of the United States, 6-0,6-1. .

The 27-year-old Mrs King, seeking to become the first woman tennis player to win $lOO,OOO in a year (she has already won more than $60,000), played nearly flawless tennis in disposing of Miss Arth in 27 minutes on the stadium court. Miss Arth, of St Paul, Minnesota, who was ranked in the top 10 in 1957 and 1958, was able to hold service only once during the match—in the first game of the second set. MEN’S SINGLES Two Britons, R. Taylor and P. Curtis, reached the second round. Taylor, a member of the World Championship Tennis group, lost the first set to T. Addison, of Australia, but then, blasting in frequent aces with his powerful left-handed service, came back to win, 2-6. 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Curtis, an independent professional, had little trouble in beating E. Baer, San Diego, California, 6-3, 6-1. B. E. Fairlie became the second New Zealand player to reach the second round— O. Parun won his match the previous day—when he beat M. Lara, of Mexico, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 when Lara retired. The Wimbledon champion, J. Newcombe, lost all chance of making up the leeway in the Pepsi -Grand Prix when he was surprisingly beaten in the first round by J. Kodes (Czechoslovakia). The leader in the race for the first prize is the tall American, S. Smith, the Wimbledon runner-up, and now—with Newcombe’s demise—the favourite for the United States title. He is eight points clear of I. Nastase, of Rumania, 27 ahead of Jugoslavia’s Z. Franulovic, and 37 clear of Newcombe. In the women's division,
