Pay freeze move
(N.Z Press, Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 2.
President Nixon yesterday sent to Congress the formal message needed to carry out his decision to postpone scheduled pay rises for Federal Government employees, the New York Times News Service reported. The President wants pay rises for white collar workers and members of the Armed Forces delayed from January 1 to July 1, 1972. Under measures announced by President Nixon on August 15 prices and wages were frozen for 90 days. Congress will have 30 days after it resumes next week in which to overturn the President’s decision. Otherwise it will stand.
In a separate statement the President, acting from the California White House, ordered a delay in scheduled pay increases for Federal blue-collar workers until next February 15.
