Official name

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright/ CAIRO, Sept. 2. Egypt’s official name has been changed to the “Arab Republic of Egypt” (A.R.E.), instead of the “United Arab Republic” (U.AJR.), as of today, the Associated Press reported. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry, informing the United Nations and foreign embassies in Cairo of the name change, said that it was undertaken to conform with establishment of the “Confederation of Arab Republics” with Libya and Syria. The U.A.R. insignia, first adopted in 1958 to designate the State union between Egypt and Syria, was maintained by Egypt after that union collapsed in 1961.
