Murray, SJW., was told yesterday When Robert Anthony Ruyter faced charges of negligently riding a bicycle, and riding a bicycle without lights. He pleaded guilty. Chief Patrol Officer D. A. S. Hay said a patrolman saw the defendant travelling at speed down Caversham Valley Road about 7.30 aan. on May 27. He gave chase, and over two-tenths of a mile
checked the defendant’s speed at up to 40 m.p.h. The defendant weaved his bicycle from left to right, dodging potholes. It was still dark, and the bicycle had no headlamp, and the tail-light was not going. Ruyter had explained when stopped that he was late for work. “It seems to me you would go pretty well in a cycling club. However, they are concerned with safety, too. It might be an idea to join one,” the Magistrate said, fining Ruyter $l5 on the negligent use charge and $5 for having no lights.
