Girls’ course for award
A five-day residential course for 14 girls—candidates for the Duke of Edinburgh gold medal award—began last evening at Hibberd Park, Spencerville. The course comprises the “Service to the Community” section of the award, and during the five days the girls will be lectured by representatives of the Mission to Lepers, Prisoners Aid and Rehabilitation Society, Youthline, and the- Mountain Safety organisation. The girls also will act as navigators for drivers of. the Landrover Club on a "safari” into the back country on Sunday. Included in the course is a debating contest, and a tour ilanned by the Canterbury duseum.
One of the course organisers, Mrs A. B. Cameron, said the course cost each girl $l2, and depending on its success, would be held again. Most of the girls are aged between 16 and 20 and are in the final stages of the gold medal award.
