TABLE TENNIS Cantabrians doing well in N.Z. titles
“The Press’* Special Service WANGANUI. Canterbury’s strong contingent of juniors worked their way through their opening games confidently in the New Zealand table tennis championships at Wanganui yesterday.
In the under-16 boys’ singles, M. Burrowes, G. Rhind, W. Adamson, and C. Waines all made the quarterfinals, and Canterbury’s New Zealand champion girls' team of B. Taylor, P. Marks, and J. Morris similarly reached the quarter-finals in the girls’ under 18.
Burrowes looks a good bet for the prestige under-18 boys’ title—but it won’t be easy—and Miss Taylor should win over an old rival. Miss K. Fraser, in the under-18 girls* semi-final. This should be a fine match. The men’s singles progressed quietly with no leading Canterbury players beaten. Adamson, a junior, hit well against T. O’Carroll, to suggest he should be in for a good under-16 tournament. Cantabrians into the last 32 are Ling Nan Ming, Loke Sim Wong, Burrowes, J. Armstrong, Rhind, and Waines—a healthy representation. In the senior men’s singles (over 35), the top seeds—M. N. Brightwell and J. Armstrong—both won their early games, but Canterbury’s other candidate, M. A. Cox, lost to the former Cantabrian, J. Kyle, in the first round— Cox was the fourth seed. Miss J. Morris moved into the semi-finals of the under--16 girls’ singles, but the promising Miss G. Marks went out in the quarter-finals to the Auckland senior representative, Miss C. Hutton. In the women’s singles,
Miss P. Mams scored a good win over Miss L. B. Smith (Bay of Plenty), who ha<J earlier removed the Otago No. 2, Miss R. Sutherland.
