Big turn-out for fire
A fire engine each from the Sydenham and Central stations, the fire staff car, two St John ambulances, three Ministry of Transport patrol cars, and two police cars turned out at 10.10 p.m. yesterday to a fire in a house at 9 Hastings Street, Sydenham. The call for the St John ambulances was made by the fire brigade when the house, which is rented by three students, was discovered full of smoke and the students were thought to be still inside.
A search by firemen using breathing apparatus showed the premises to be empty. The fire damaged a bedroom at the rear of the house. Some smoke damage was also caused.
