Correspondence School site

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 1. Rumours that the national Correspondence School will be resited in Christchurch are unfounded, according to the Minister of Education (Mr Taiboys).

Replying to questions by Mr J. L. Hunt (Lab., New Lynn), Mr Taiboys said that the Government had authorised the preparation of plans for a permanent building for the Correspondence School in Wellington. The present school in Clifton Terrace, Wellington, will be demolished to make way for the new motor route.

“Some details relating to the acquisition of the site have yet to be completed, but I expect to be able to announce a final decision on this point shortly,” he said. In a subsequent statement, Mr Taiboys said that as the site was to be redeveloped as part of the motorway project, the school would have to move shortly. “The Government has looked at the possibility of moving the school to another centre,” Mr Taiboys said. “Christchurch. Wanganui, Palmerston North and Masterton were all examined. The Government agreed, however, that the interests of the pupils of the school would be served best by retaining it in Wellington.”
