GOVT WORK FORCE

Rate of growth 1 per cent (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 1. Staff numbers in the Public Service had grown more slowly since 1949 than ihe national labour force, and since 1967 the increase had been less than 1 per cent a year, Parliament was advised today.

In a written reply to . a Parliamentary question from Mr J. L. Hunt (Lab., New Lynn), the Minister in Charge of the State Services (Mr Taiboys) said that in view of the increase in the work load as a result of New Zealand’s population growth, this increase could be described only as modest. He said an effort was made to ensure that any increase in numbers of' State employees was the minimum consistent with the efficient performance of work required to be undertaken.
