Purtie . showed he had improved since racing last week when he ran a dashing seven furlongs at Awapunl yesterday morning in preparation for the Newman Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday. Overnight heavy rain made the tracks very heavy, especially on the course’ proper, where horse* could do little better than threequarter pace. On the inside trial, Purdle ran seven furlongs in Imin 32sec, the last three in 39sec. Thun dashed over half a mile In 54sec, the final three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. He was galloping comfortably all the way, and taking into account his good race at the Carterton meeting he should race prominently in the Durie Handicap. Although Young Ida took Imin 13sec for her five-furlong task, she was not asked for a serious effort at any stage, and could have done better than 42sec for the last three furlongs. She ran a very bold race at on Saturday.
