Honey Carlyle badly rated, trainer says

The reason that Honey Carlyle is not an acceptor for the open sprint at Ashburton next Tuesday is that her Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw, considers that she has been badly weighted. “I’m seriously thinking of suggesting to her owner that he retire the mare to the stud,” said Shaw yesterday.

Honey Carlyle’s owner is Mr K. C. Burley (Auckland), proprietor of the Carlyle Stud. Shaw considers 1 that the Ashburton County Racing Club’s handicapper (Mr C. A. Stanley) has rated the mare highly because she is consistent and not solely on her record of wins.

Altogether, Honey Carlyle has had four open-class starts for a second, two thirds, and a last-start win, under 8-2, in the Selwyn Handicap at the Grand National meeting last month.

“For that lone success, she was given an extra 61b for the Spring Handicap at Ashburton and was rated 21b below Lloyd, which has won three open sprints, and equal with Watchman, which has won 10 open races—nine of them sprints," said Shaw. L. H. Pratt, the Orari

trainer of Lloyd,' was asked yesterday for his opinion about the weights for the Ashburton sprint. **l don’t consider that my horse should be top-weight, but you can’t keep them in training and keep them at home,” he said.
