Arts appeal opened

GV.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Aug. 31. Direct fostering and development of the arts is a task best carried out by an agency acting independently of the State, the Deputy; Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) said.

He was speaking at the opening of an appeal by the Friends of the New Zealand Ballet and Opera Trust, an organisation which hopes to bring financial relief and support to the two arts, through public donations and; contributions.

Mr Marshall said although he believed that Government had an essential part to play in the development of the arts, an independent agency allowed a free play in the exercise of judgment among those involved.

Both ballet and opera depended on community support for survival which they have achieved by persistent efforts in the past, the Minister said. However, the two arts might have come, financially and artistically, to the cross-roads, Mr Marshall said. He expressed the hope that the appeal would bring relief to the fortunes of both. i
