Sept. 9 decision on Merry Estate

The main stadium site for the 1974 Commonwealth Games is still not settled, but a decision on whether it should be the Merry Estate is expected to be made by the City Council on September 9.

After a meeting lasting and hour and a half, members of the City Council and the Games organising committee last evening issued a statement saying that the committee proposed to the council at an informal meeting that the Merry Estate, adjacent to Kerr’s Reach, should be developed as the track and field venue for the 1974 Games. Meetings of the council’s

reserves, works, and finance committees will be called to consider the proposal formally and a special full meeting of the council will be held on September 9.

Questioned after the meeting, the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey) said that details of the four possible sites had been presented by the Games committee and it had shown that it was strongly in favour of the Merry Estate. He said he expected that a final decision would be made at the special meeting of the council on September 9. Work would then begin immediately.
