N.Z. GOLF TITLES

Entrants in tournament The importance of competing in the New Zealand amateur championship in order to win selection for the national golf team is emphasised with the announcement of the entries. The long-serving members of New Zealand teams, R. C. Murray, E. J. McDougall, G. E. Clarke and S. G. Jones, are all in the field to compete at the Hutt club later this month. So is the Wellington No. I, R. M. Barltrop, who seems certain to win a place; and the Canterbury captain, B. C. Taylor, favoured for the sixth and final position. Taylor’s strongest challengers are there, too. P. M. Burney, the North Island champion, and three former internationals—G. D. Brown, J. D. Durry, and G. C. Stevenson—are among the entries. There is a comparatively small entry from Canterbury and South Canterbury clubs. I. D. Dobson, M. W. Small, D. G. Crombie, D. L. Beggs (all Canterbury clubs); P. D. Harvey (Kaikoura), and M. L. Maw (Timaru) are some of the few South Island entrants.

P. K. Cleland, a noted young player for Russley before moving to Auckland, and B. A. Heibner, the former Fiji cricket representative, are others who have entered.
