University costs
The University of Canterbury might not be able to achieve the intended level of growth in the present fiveyear period, the registrar (Mi G. G. Turbott) has told the University of Canterbury Council.
Reporting on an estimated expenditure next year of more than s7m, Mr Turbott said that the budget for the third year of the persent quinquennial period recorded significant increases in income and expenditure. "During the last year and for the rest of the present quinquennium, this university is expected to absorb cost increases arising out of award wages rate changes and price rises. These effects could not be foreseen,” he said.
The project income of the university next year is $6,984,760, made up of the Government grants ($5,939,560), tuition fees $834,250), extension studies fees ($36,000) and rentals from endowment lands ($40,000). The biggest items of estimated expenditure are salaries ($4,717,859), re-equipment funds ($374,730), library $250,000), maintenance ($230,000), cleaning and caretaking ($204,000).
