U.S. aid to Cambodia

The Acting Prime Minister of Cambodia (Mr Sirik Matak) said today that President Nixon had promised Cambodia SUS2OOm worth of military equipment and SUSUOm in economic aid. Mr Sirik Matak, who arrived back in Phnom Penh yesterday after three weeks in the United States, Japan and the Philippines, said that the United States military and economic aid, for the fiscal year which began on July 1, had been promised in Washington before Mr Nixon made his statement of a 10 per cent foreign aid cut, and the Cambodian leader added: "I don’t know whether that will apply to Cambodia.” Mr Sirik Matak also told reporters that officials of the International Monetary Fund in Japan had approved, in principle, the establishment of a special fund to aid Cambodia; but, he added, details had yet to be worked out.
