Release of prisoners
Sir,—The Justice Department seems to blithely ignore the reality of the recent sharp increase in the incidence of crime in Christchurch. The facts are (1) that this city has the highest number of unemployed in the country, (2) that the Justice Department persists in releasing prisoners in Christchurch regardless of the unemployment problem, (3) ' that many former prisoners are jobless and often penniless when released, and (4) that with an increase in numbers released (even a “slight" increase) an extra burden is placed on the city’s police and Mr Missen’s own probation officers. The reply of the Secretary for Justice is so far removed from the points raised by correspondents that one would be forgiven for believing that the Justice Department is unaware of the situation outlined by Mr Tait, a man who really cares about the citizens of Christchurch and our property.—Yours, etc., B.W.H. August 17, 1971. [This correspondence is now closed.—Ed., “The Press.”]
