Anniversary of historic win
The twenty-fifth anniversary of one of the greatest sporting achievements of a West Coast team, the day that its Rugby league representatives beat the British tourists, 17-8 at Victoria Park, Greymouth, took place nine days ago. This was undoubtedly one of the finest British teams to visit Australia and New Zealand. It beat the Kangaroos in two tests and drew the other, losing only to South Coast, Queensland and Newcastle while in Australia. Britain suffered two defeats in this country, to West Coast and New Zealand. It was nfijjble that West Coast’s -nine-point
margin was the largest recorded against Britain on the complete tour. The West coast stand-ofl half and captain in the historic victory was W. F. McNaughtan, who has since been prominent as a coach and selector in Canterbury, Also included in the team were the Kiwis, R. G. H. Nuttall, W. F. Mountford, R. Aynsley, J. Newton, C. J. Mcßride and K. H. J. Mount*ord. West Coast’s team was: Nuttall; Teen, W. Mountford, J. Curnow, L. Beban; McNaughtan (captain), Ord; P. Coll, Aynsley, Newton; Mcßride, J. Mundy; K. Mountford. -
