Enjoyable concert at high school

Papanui High School’s annual music concert, in the school hall last evening, was some reflection of the wide variety of musical taste at the school. Items by members of the staff and children from the Belfast Primary School added a necessary balance to the evening’s entertainment. The Belfast children began the programme with a pleasant German folk song and they were joined later by the Form I and II pupils in Paul Gregory’s “Song of the Sun.” The children then accompanied members of the high ■ school choir in “Creation Hymn,” by Beethoven. The variation of voices during this number was quite effective. Miss Janet Cameron and 1 Miss Glendi Moore played expert piano solos, and the

school’s female, music teacher (Miss F. Scrivener), sang a popular Mozart solo “Voi Che Sapete” (You who have Knowledge). The school's brass band, conducted by Mr R. Young, opened section two of the programme with the popular brass band number, “Puffing Billy.” They also performed three other numbers with much ease. Perhaps the most popular items of the evening were from the large school orchestra, conducted by Mr E. P. Rowe, a music teacher at the school. The orchestra performed the gimmicky Leroy Anderson numbers “Syncopated Clock” and “Typewriter.” Although quite difficult, the percussion sections of these were handled competently. The orchestra’s last item was the popular “Carmen” and was performed with enthusiasm. Also popular was the performance of the staff vocal group—obviously a product of much rehearsal—a slowtempo version of the Negro spiritual “Were You There" and the faster “01’ Zip Coon.” The harmony they achieved was very effective.
