Conservation plea
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. July 23. The Minister of Forests (Mr Maclntyre) is to be asked, in the interests of conservation, to create reserves of pingao to ensure a continuous source of supply for the art of weaving.
This was decided at the annual conference of the Maori Women’s Welfare League in New Plymouth. Mrs M, Penfold, vice-presi-dent. who presented the remit on behalf of the Dominion executive, said if representations were not made it was possible pingao would be outplanted with pine forest development. Progress had destroyed the pingao before the Maoris of today had realised how important it was was Maoritanga.
Delegates were asked to advise headquarters where stands were situated so that they could be advised to the Minister.
Pingao is a plant which grows near the sea-shore. Its leaves are used for ornamental weaving.
