Strong bracket in mile

"The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON. The Karate-Tramore bracket is sure to start a short-priced favourite for the Winter Cup Trial, first leg of the T.A.B. concession double at the Manawatu Hunt Club’s meeting at Awapuni tomorrow. Form at the Wellington meeting just concluded is the main factor when assessing prospects for the mile event. Karate and Tramore were both placed at the meeting. Mi were Sir Cullus and , which might provide the greatest opposition to the stablemates. Karate could not have been more impressive when win-

ning a sprint double at Wanganui last month. He might have been feeling the effects of those two races when only seventh at Hawera, but in the Whyte Handicap at Trantham, his only start at the meeting, he made ground rapidly from the home turn to take third.

Tramore, which won this event last year, lined up twice at Trentham. He made no impression the first time, but last Saturday chased Cambridge Fair home over seven furlongs. Obviously the extra furlong this time will be to his liking. If he runs here in preference to Paeroa, Sir Cullus will come in for heavy support. He finished fourth in the Whyte then, in the Parliamentary Handicap, got his tongue over the bit. He was

'third also at Te Rapa on Wednesday. Sir Cullus has won twice on the track, and his Whyte Handicap showing was good enough to make him an outstanding place bet at least. Success for local stables in the Winter Cup Trial is hardly a bright prospect, but they might carry off the second leg, the Tararua Hack Plate, With Foxallen. Prepared by N. Eales, Foxallen has only just left maiden ranks, but an important fact about his chances on Saturday is the distance—lo furlongs. The four-year-old has looked staying material ever since he stepped on a racetrack. He beat a very moderate collection of maidens at Wanganui at his last appearance but finished the race as he has always done, with a sustained final burst.
