Public Service pay rise soon
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, July 22.
An increase of between ssom and s6om in the total annual salary bill for State servants is indicated as a result of the half-yearly survey made by the Department of Labour.
This will be the increase when the State service scales are adjusted to those in general employment.
The chairman of the Cabinet Committee on the State Services (Mr Taiboys) said today that details of the movement in wage and salary rates in the private sector between October, 1970, and April, 1971, as disclosed by the half-yearly survey had been released to the State Services Co-ordinating Committee and the Combined State Service Organisations. Mr Taiboys said that the survey disclosed a movement —after adjustment by the Government Statistician in accordance with the State Services Remuneration and Conditions of Employment Act—of 9.6 per cent in average weekly ordinary-time earnings.
"An advance payment of 3 per cent in lieu of the general wage order effective from November 23, 1970, has already been made to the
majority of State servants,” said Mr Taiboys.
"After discussions between the co-ordinating committee and the combined organisations a recommendation will be made to the Government for the necessary adjustments to be made as soon as possible.”
