U.N. TRUST FUND
Suggestion by Mr Kirk ? (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON July 21. It was time New Zealand made a contribution to the United Nations special trust fund for South Africa, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) told Parliament yesterday. Speaking during the debate on the estimates of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Kirk said that New Zealand had voted for the setting up of the fund but had never made a contribution, though 53 other countries had.
The fund was for legal defence,' aid to families and assistance to those suffering under the racial legislation, he said.
Other members had suggested it would be unsafe for a South African women’s hockey team to visit New Zealand, but Mr Kirk said this was “stretching a long bow.” Mr V. S. Young (Nat., Egmont) said it was a great tragedy that international politics had intruded into the sporting arena. The sporting bridges that existed between various peoples had to be preserved. Problems could not be solved if barriers were created.
