The 26-year-old Indian vicecaptain and off-spinner, Venkataraghavan, recorded the best bowling figures in English cricket this season, with nine for 93 against Hampshire yesterday. The previous best was eight for 42 by A Greig, the South African bom England test all-rounder, for Sussex against Kent last month. Venkataraghavan’s brilliant performance, beating his career-best of eight for 72, had Hampshire all out for 271, leaving the Indians to score only 106 to record their fourth successive victory. Scores: At Bournemouth: Hampshire 198 and 271 (R. Gilliat 79, R. Lewis 71), lost to India 364 and 106/5 by five wickets. At Hove: Leicestershire 416/8 beat Sussex 230 and 185 (R. Illingworth 4/43). by an innings and one run. At Maidstone: Kent 239 and 315/7 (M. Denness 67, A. Knott 117, J. Shepherd 60), drew with Nottinghamshire 412/6 declared. At Worcester: Worcestershire 364/7 declared and 214/7 declared (J. Ormrod 70; R. East 4/32L drew with Essex 321 and 183/7 (B. D’Oliveira 4/77). At Buxton: Derbyshire 300/6 declared and 225/8 declared (D. Hughes 5/96), drew with Lancashire 300/9 declared and 120/5. At the Oval: Middlesex 402/9 declared and 208/5 declared, beat Surrey 355/8 declared and 137 (J. Latchman 6/39), by 118 runs. At Northampton: Northamptonshire 264 and 281/6 declared (D. Steele 90. Mushtaq Mohammad 70), drew with Glamorgan 292 and 128/8 (P. Lee 5/39). At Sheffield: Yorkshire 225 and 251/5 declared (D. Padgett 63, J. Hampshire 105 not out), lost to Gloucestershire 276/9 declared and 201/6 (M. Procter 111), by four wickets.
