Stocks ease after firm opening in Australia

Mining, and oil shares eased yesterday after a firmer opening on Australian stock exchanges. At the close, all sections were lower.

Woodside traders were not impressed by reports which suggested that the North Rankin gas field is larger than any in Bass Strait, and they marked the stock down to a low of 110 c. It peaked briefly at 128 c, but closed 14c lower at 116 c. The 30c paid shares were traded between 68c and 80c and they closed 10c lower at 70c.

Mid East Oil was largely unaffected and it shed 1c to 50c. Beach also shed 1c to 44c.

A.A.O. firmed 5c to 160 c, Oil Search traded 5c higher at 30c.

C.R.A. rose 10c to 860 c, and New B.H. firmed 20c to 118 c. Kathleen Investments put on 6c to 790 c; but Queensland Mines dropped 50c to 2250 c. Poseidon also eased 50c to 2250 c. Peko weakened further, and fell 10c to 910 c, while Great Boulder and Gons Gold were marginally lower. W.M.C. eased 3c to 380 c, and a special sale of 17,200 shares was recorded at 379 c. Seicast stood out in the

speculative section by gaining 11c to 149 c. Mareeba firmed 8c to 86c and Spargo’s and Westmex rose 5c each. Southland eased 5c to 105 c while Nth BH was fractionally lower. C.S.R. put on 2c to 554 c, but Pioneer Sugar dropped 7c to 165 c. Fairymead eased 5c to 210 c, Ampol dropped 1c to 52c and Sleigh fell 3c to 44c. Comalco was 5c lower at 365 c and Western Collieries eased 10c to 290 c. Thiess firmed 5c to 340 c. and Austin! put on 3c to 340 c.
