Weaving awards
A Christchurch woman. Miss Elizabeth Allan, has won first prize In the place-mat section of. the Reserve Bank's contest for hand weaving in wool. The South Wand did well In the contest, Mrs Margery Blackman (Dunedin) winning first prize In the floor rug section, and second place for her table mats.
The awards were presented by Lady Porritt at a function at the Academy of Pine Arts in Wellington on Tuesday, reports the New Zealand Press Association. Miss Allan, a retired deaconess, received a prize of $lOO. In the rug and wall hanging classes the prizes were *2OO (first) and $lOO (second), and in the place mat section, $lOO and $5O. The rugs and place mats were judged by Mrs Ida Lough (Christchurch). Mr G. Ngan (Wellington) judged the wall hangings. Some of the entries—rugs, wall hangings, and place mats—will be displayed at the Reserve Bank’s new building at the junction of The Terrace and Bowen Street when It Is occupied. The official party at the function consisted of. in addition to Lady Porritt, the president of the New Zealand Council of Spinning, Weaving, and Woolcrafts (Mr E. C. Powdrell), the Governor of the Reserve Bank (Mr A. R. Low), and Mrs Low; the president of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts (Mr R. J. Waghorn) and Mrs Waghorn; the South Island vice-president of the council (Mrs J. Moore); Professor J. C. Reid (Auckland), who gave an address; and Mr D.. Car-son-Parker. president of the New Zealand chapter of the World Craft Council.
The prize winners were:— Floor rug.—Mrs Margery Blackman (Dunedin) 1, Mrs Gudde Muller (Hamilton) 2.
Wall hanging.—Mrs Judy Balg-. ent (Wellington) 1, Mrs Margaret Thompson (Eastbourne) 2. Table mat.—Miss Elizabeth Allan (Christchurch) 1, Mrs Blackman (Dunedin) 2.
