WOOLSTON LIBRARY
Second to reach 100
The Woolston Public Library held its hundredth annual meeting on Thursday evening to become only the second library in Christ : church to reach its century. To mark the occasion, a history of the library was compiled by Mrs E. Hughes. The history was compiled from the library’s minute books, and was read by five members to a large gathering which included the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey), and Mrs Guthrey, the city librarian (Mr J. E. D. Stringleman), and the member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr T. M. McGuigan) and Mrs McGuigan. Among humorous points a decision to erect a sign on the library wall asking readers to take better aim at a spittoon; poor shots required sawdust to be spread around it.
Hie spittoon, which was the subject of this minute, was on display at the centennial meeting, as were the library’s minute books for the last 100 years. Officers are: Patron, Mr A. R. Guthrey; chairman, Mrs L. Stapleton; secretary-treas-urer, Mrs E. C. Robinson; book buyer, Mr T. Otten; committee, Mesdames N. Van der Hayden, L. Skirving, M. Garrett, E. Hughes, M. Timms, and Mr W. Dumbleton; auditor, Mr W. B. Hughes.
