Three bills, the Hospital Amendment Bill No. 2, the Dental Amendment Bill and the Distillation Bill, were introduced and read a first time. The Distillation Bill received a pro forma second reading and was referred to the Commerce Committee.

The annual report of the National Water and Soil Conservation Authority was tabled. Ministers answered 15 questions. Two petitions were returned by the Petitions Committee. One, relating to the sale of sections at Bumside High School, was returned “for consideration, 3 ’ with the recommendation that sales of sections should be deferred until the school reached its optimum size. The other, praying that the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) be censured for allowing his picture to be used for a gin advertisement, drew a ’’no recommendation.” An Opposition motion to return it to the committee was defeated 40-35.

The Invercargill City Aluminium Smelter Water Supply Bill was read a third time and passed. The Christchurch and Lower Hutt Drainage Amendment Bills were read a second time.

The House proceeded with the second reading debate on the Bank of New Zealand Bill.
