FACTORY’S MOVE

Govt will not interfere

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, July 15.

The reasons for the decision of A. Wander (N.Z.), Ltd, to transfer its factory from Christchurch to the North Island were given in Parliament today by the Acting Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr AdamsSchneider). “Because a major part of the domestic demand for the company’s products is in the North Island, and because these have to compete with similar products at present manufactured in this area, it is understandable that the company also seeks to minimise costs and have its products competitive in the market. The decision has been made by the company on commercial considerations and the Government does not propose to interfere,” the Minister said.

Mr T. M. McGuigan (Lab., Lyttelton): Would not these reasons also apply to many other South Island-based industries? Mr Adams-Schneider: Not necessarily. Many South Island firms can, ’ and do, trade quite profitably with the North Island.
