Unidentified raffle

Sir, —On Friday, July 9, I bought a raffle ticket from a stall in the Square. There was no prominently displayed sign giving the name of the charity for which the stall was being held, and I was told by the seller of the ticket, "It’s all for local charities.” Later I discovered that my ticket bore

only a number and I have no way of telling when the raffle is to be drawn and I cannot look for the result in the local newspapers as I do not know what name to watch for. I feel that the whole affair has been grossly mismanaged by the organisers of “the local charities.” What guarantee have I, as a member of the general public that the raffle was ever drawn?—Yours, etc.,

LUX GENTIUM LEX.. July 12, 1971. [Mr G. Tait, Chief Superintendent of Police replies: “Inquiries have revealed that the organisation running these raffles is a bona fide charitable organisation. The results of this raffle were advertised in your paper on Saturday, July 10. Raffles of this type- are provided for under Section 42A of the Gaming Act, 1908.”]
