CANNED FOLK’
Although presenting a different theme, the University of Canterbury Folk Music Club’s “Canned Folk” at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre last evening followed much the same pattern as folk concerts of previous years. Many of the items seemed unrehearsed and, as with many such concerts, the programme was almost superfluous—it was so rarely adhered to.
Yet several performances made up for the inadequacies of others. Ella Buchanan, accompanying herself on the piano, sang with perfect intonation to an accompaniment that was by no means an easy one. Others who retained the good reputation of the club, veterans of previous concerts, were Rosa Shiels, Frank Woods, the Blues Alley Spasm Band and the new Stoney Lonesome. Two newcovers to the club’s concerts, Paula Feather and Pene Evison, both created a favourable impression and Pene Evison’s flute playing added a note of professionalism and sophistication to the concert. Phil Garland again adhered to his concert repertoire of folk songs which he seems to reserve for these concerts. The poem he read, however, entitled “Ballad of the Bushmen’s Club” made a welcome change. “Canned Folk” runs until July 17. —F.P.
