Freight rates boards’ task
(N.Z. Press Association; WELLINGTON, July 14. The Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) was asked today if it would be possible to seek a full disclosure of the financial position of the British shipping lines before the next round ’ of freight-rate talks. Dr A. M. Finlay (Lab., Henderson) said his question • came after the revealing by the Overseas Shipowners’ Committee, in reply to statements by Mr R. A. Owens, 1 that “25 per cent of the British lines’ income is paid out 1 in New Zealand.” Mr Marshall replied that ; the negotiation of freight rates was the statutory rei sponsibility of the Meat and i Dairy boards, and that the boards had access to the lines’ books where they concerned New Zealand. The Government was kept i informed whenever freight rates were being discussed.
