Two sulphur fires

Christchurch firemen were forced to wear breathing apparatus when they worked in choking fumes to fight two sulphur fires at the Mata South Road plant of Kempthome and Prosser and Company, Ltd. Two engines from the Harewood and Sockbum stations were called to the first fire early yesterday morning when flames broke out in the sulphur store.

Firemen worked for two hours with five sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reels to put out the fire. The second blaze broke out late last evening in the sulphur melting plant. Again firemen were forced to don breathing apparatus, using one internal hosereel to put out the fire.

Both fires caused only slight damage.
