New Brighton pier
Sir, —At 2 p.m. on Saturday the tide was far out and the sea dead calm. I was astonished to see a long array of pile stumps in sets of three—a formidable hazard for the toes and feet of the unwary twice daily when covered by salt water. Could not the City Council have arranged with the contractors to have drawn them as a dentist draws teeth?—Yours, etc., W. WALKER. June 14, 1971.
[The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Secular) replies: “The force required to withdraw piles from sand is very high and beyond the capacity of any local lifting or jacking equipment, especially in the time available between tides or in the surf. For this reason, when the pier was demolished holes were dug around the piles and they were broken off 3ft below the then beach level. Some erosion * has, apparently, occurred and the drop in the beach level has resulted in exposure of the piles. The level of the beach fluctuates depending upon the weather conditions.”]
