An estimated 45m Americans of both sexes now sew. their own clothes, and last year two out of every five women and children wore some home-made clothes, surveys here show. Sales of patterns, fabrics, and sewing machines reached $3,000m last year, double the sewing industry’s total turnover in 1963.
