Safety light poles used

(N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 21. Forty tubular columns, 40ft high, supporting street lighting on the newlycompleted Epsom-Balmoral regional road will, if struck by a vehicle, sheer off at the base causing little damage to the vehicle. This is the first time such poles have been used in New Zealand and they were lit for the first time tonight. Each weighs nearly 3001 b. On impact, a sheering-pin, bolt and flange arrangement at the base snaps and the pole twists to fall off the roadway. The poles are made up of several sections which can be replaced when a section is damaged. A plug near the base disconnects the electrical supply as the base is shorn off.
