PARKING OFF MOTORWAY
Caution urged
on council
The council should be very cautious in giving any undertaking to provide off-street parking which was made necessary by the construction of the Southern Motorway, and which was the responsibility of the National Roads Board, said the council’s townplanning officer (Mr R. M. Parker), in a report to the Waimairi County Council last evening.
Mr Parker was commenting on a proposal by the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority that the council should share with the Ministry of Works the landscaping and off-street parking on the southern side of the motorway at Halls Road and the Marylands industrial estate, and that the parking, a replacement for land last to the motorway by the taking of Addington Raceway land, could be used by race and show patrons.
Mr Parker said he did not consider this idea feasible, and if the carparks were any distance from factories, this would encourage employees to park on the roadside. The council received the rep rt, and decided to confer with the District Commissioner of Works (Mr E. E. Lawrence) on landscaping. Mr Parker was asked to discuss the parking scheme with the planning authority. The County Engineer (Mr A. J. W. Lamb) said that progress had been made on the proposed exchange of land not required for the motorway at Marylands.
