Complications over swimming pool

Complications that have arisen over the Papanui Swimming Club’s scheme to cover its pool were referred to in a report received by the Waimairi County Council last evening from its recreation sub-committee.

The report said that the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board had declined to consent to the covering of the pool, and adjourned the hearing to enable the club to call further evidence when more land had been obtained on the southern side of the pool. “The board has taken the attitude that only in exceptional circumstances would it support the council departing from the standards laid down in the district, and it describes as gross the departures involved in this proposal,” the report said. “Informal discussion with the board indicated that it

would not be satisfied with anything less than the purchase of at least the house at 5 Winters Road for the use of off-street parking.” Following the board’s decision, the report continued, there had been joint meetings between the City Council and county council, which had each agreed to contribute $16,040 to the project. Both councils were now agreed that they would not go beyond the commitment of $16,040 each, that the money would be held for up to two years, and made available to the club at any time within this period if the club could I produce an acceptable 'alternative to extend or up-

grade the pool as an openair one.

The council confirmed the agreement A similar decision was reached at last evening’s meeting of the City Council.

Fendafton Road.—Having heard nothing since it was told in March, 1970, that decisions could be expected within a year on grade separation plans for the Fendalton Road railway crossing, the council decided to again ask the Railways Department for its policy. The County Engineer (Mr A. J. W. Lamb) said that without the decision, the council could not plan the reconstruction of Fendalton Road. - No permit—Deciding not to prosecute a builder, Mr J. E. P. Hollobon, for starting work without a permit at 51 Kent Lodge Avenue, the council expressed its grave concern, and warned him that future contraventions

could result in prosecution. Church Corner.—Proposals by Syndication Management, Ltd, for building commercial premises at Church Comer were approved in principle and Mr Lamb was asked to discuss with the company a contribution towards acquiring more land for parking.
