Potato ban

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, June 15. The Australian Department of Health has imposed a plant quarantine ban on the importation of potatoes from New Zealand, except for immediate processing. The Health Minister (Senator Ivor Greenwood) said the ban had been imposed because of the potato disease black wart on some farms in the South Island. Black wart, which once threatened the extinction of many popular varieties of potato in Britain and Europe, is not present in Australia. Senator Greenwood said potatoes imported from New Zealand for immediate processing must meet certain criteria,, including quarantine requirements.
