CANTERBURY PIG

Top award at show (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, June 17. A Canterbury Landrace boar won the award for the best pig in the show at the national show and sale of stud pigs held here yesterday. It was Timperlea Warwick Sth, exhibited by G. Tim* perley, of Coutts Island. Mr Tlmperley’s pigs also took first place for Landrace sows between 10 and 14 months and first place in the class for boars under 10 months. . _ In the Large White section B. B. Bryant, of Nelson, had a seconfl place in the class for sows from 10 to 14 months and a first place in the class for boars over 10 months; and N. A. Mann, of Oamaru, had an entry which won a second place among the boars under 10 months.

Mr Timperley was also among the trophy winners taking the Landrace Cup and also the G, M. Whitelock Cup for the best pig in the show. Mr N. Chappell, of Canterbury, was the judge of the Wessex, Landrace and Berkshire sections. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Pig Breeders' Association, also held in Palmerston North, Mr R. L. Skilling, of Canterbury, was re-elected president and Mr B. Bryant, of Nelson, was elected a vice-president. Mr Skilling told the meeting that land had been bought for the boar-testing unit to be established by the New Zealand Pig Producers’ Council in Canterbury. A voluntary improvement scheme was also taking shape. Thirty-one breeders in the South Island and 12 in the North Island had entered nearly 600 sows.
