Manapouri protests

A statement in a report of the Parliamentary reporter of “The Press" that there had been no opposition to the Lake Manapouri scheme until nine years after the raising of the lake was first authorised by Parliament was often made, but was inaccurate, Mr A. J. Scott, president of the New Zealand Scenery Preservation Society, said yesterday. The statement had been made to the Commission of Inquiry, but it had reported: “We do not find this to be so . . . from 1959 these interests were showing their concern . . . there was the petition organised by the Royal Forest and Bird Society signed by 24,864 people . . . in 1960.”

Mr Scott said that between 1960 and 1968 his society had issued a number of factual statements which had been given generous publicity by newspapers.
