“High price” for bride

(N.ZP.A.-Reuter— Copyright) HONIARA (Solomon Islands),

June 16. A bride has been sold in the Western Solomons for two strings of polished shell rings and $25.40 in cash—a particularly high price on the local marriage market. The dowry was paid by Mark Alipio to the father of his bride, Marina Panakera, before the recent wedding on Ranonga Island could go ahead.

Although the bride price is not as common now as in the, past, a high price like that of Marina is sometimes demanded for the only daughter of the family. Part of the dowry was paid in shell rings because shell is used by natives as currency. The two shell strings paid by the bridegroom were valued at $2O each. The wedding was followed by a feast attended by 300 people and the traditional climax came when the guests threw the couple into the sea.
