MAGISTRATE’S COURT Four women remanded for sentence

Four women who were found hiding in the brine room of the M.V. Icenic were remanded on bail until June 22 for sentence when they appeared, before Mr W. F. Brown, s.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Ail pleaded guilty to being found without lawful excuse on the ship and three pleaded guilty to being idle and disorderly in that they had insufficient means* of support.

The defendants were Maude Emma Awhlmako Kemp, aged 32, who pleaded guilty to both charges; Jeanen Marsden, aged 23, who pleaded guilty to both charges; Wendy Jane Robson, aged 20, who pleaded guilty to both charges; and Carol Agnes Alexi Kelly, aged 28, who pleaded guilty to being without lawful excuse on the ship. All the defendants were unemployed. Sergeant W. J. Nicholl said that the chief officer of the ship complained to the Lyttelton police that the women were found hiding in the brine room at 11.45 a.m. on June 22. All the defendants admitted being unemployed for periods varying between two weeks and five weeks. Sums of money in their possession varied between 81c and $2.31. DISCHARGED Frederick Christian Dlerck, a led 25; a labourer (Miss J. M. anson), was convicted and discharged without penalty when he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing two bottles of muk on January 1. Miss Manson said the offence was a childish prank committed after a New Year party. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge of falling to give way to the right, brought against Raymond Kevin Garlick, aged 47, a factory manager, was dismissed. Garlick, who pleaded not represented by Mr MISCELLANEOUS OFFENCES In miscellaneous police prosecutions convictions were entered and fines imposed as follows, with costs of $5 in each case: Excessive alcohol: Grant Hedley Stocker, $75, disqualified for one year (failed to stop after accident, $5O, refused to accompany traffic officer, costs only, careless driving, costs only); Kevin Joseph Austin, $75, disqualified for six months; Roy Lawrence Austin, $2OO, disqualified for two years (failed to give way at sign, costs only). Failed to give way when turning right: Kenneth Leslie Harland, $25, ordered to attend traffic lectures. Careless use: Christopher Robin Dowson, *4O, disqualified for three months.

RECKLESS DRIVING George Alexander Robertson, aged 23, a shoemaker, was fined $l5O and disqualified from driving for two years on a charge of riding a motor-cycle reckleasly. He pleaded guilty. Traffic Officer D. s. Mackenzie said that Robertson was chased from Cathedral Square to New Brighton and was caught on the beach when he and nls pillion passenger fell off his motor-cycle.
