University leads in table tennis

University I became a clear leader In the A grade winter Inter-club table tennis competition when It overwhelmed

the other unboaton team, Rlccarton 11, U-0, In the seventh round last evening. The University team of Ling Nan Ming, Wong Chee Kong, and Loke Sim Wong—all of whom have represented Canterbury—conceded only three games In the 12 matches. However, J. Baxter, substituting for the Injured R. W. Mercer In the Rlccarton team, had the distinction of taking the first game from Loke this season. . ' . With the return of the top Canterbury Junior, M. W. Burrowes, and with its No. 1 player, M. R. Spinks, again In excellent form, the Avonslde I team unexpectedly beat Rlccarton I by the good margin of 9-3. Always a formidable opponent when his loop drives remain on the table, Spinks gained, a revenge win over the thirdranked Canterbury player, J. Armstrong, in three games. Last week-end, Armstrong, in winning the South Canterbury singles title, had beaten Spinks in a five-game quarterfinal. Burrowes found the experience of Armstrong top much to overcome* but «cored straight*

game wins over J. Lelliott and W. Adamson. Adamson, like Burrowes, a member of the Can. terbury junior team, established early leads in both games; but several careless over-hits and bad luck with the net allowed Burrowes to take both in narrow decisions. Three singles wins by M. J. Warren were still not enough for Avonslde II to down the Dalllngton trio.
