PARITY FOR WOMEN
Appointment by Nixon
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 15.
A “Women’s Lib commissioner,’’ to be responsible for equal opportunities for women in Government service, has been appointed by President Nixon.
Mrs Jayne Baker Spain, a successful businesswoman with two teen-age sons, was sworn in at the White House as a deputy head of the Civil Service Commission.
At the ceremony, Mr Nixon said that he had received a complaint from a SUS7OOO---year, low-level Government worker saying that she had been passed over for promotion because she was a woman.
Mr Nixon asked Mrs Spain to ensure that there was absolute fairness and no prejudice in awarding promotions in the Civil Service. He also asked her to seek out talented and able women in all Government departments and move them up the promotion ladder.
