Canterbury billiards
The defending champion and No. 1 seed, E. Simons, had an unexpectedly hard struggle when he met B. Edlin in the first round of the 1871 Canterbury billiards championship which began on Monday night and was completed last evening. Edlin. who is in only his first season of the A grade competition, took an early lead, and with his scoring complemented by some wonderful potting. He led by 17 at the 300 mark. Simons came to light with a break of 65. and there were only a few points between the two when the scores reached 400.
However, Simons’s greater experience stood him in good stead, and with two breaks in the forties, went on to win. 500-428. The three other seeded players—B. Klrkness, who had 88 unfinished (the highest of the round), R. O’Callaghan, and C. Kelly, all kept in contention—although Kelly had a few problems before he disposed of E. Martin by 51 points.
