Residents kept awake
Things that go bang in the night are keeping residents near the northern end of Stanmore Road awake and their attempts to have the situation remedied have so far been without success.
The “things” are large, steel plates placed over holes in Stanmore Road between London Street and North Avon Road while work is being done on drainage there, and every time a vehicle passes over one a loud crash results.
One resident, in nearby Avalon Street, said his family had not been able to sleep on Monday night and telephone calls to the Drainage Board and the Christchurch City Council had met with replies of "It’s not our problem,” and "We can’t do anything about it, perhaps you should ring the Mayor." “It sounds like canon-fire and the flow of traffic up and down Stanmore Road never stops no matter how early in the morning it is,” he said.
A reporter of "The Press” who drove down Stanmore Road last evening said that one of the plates in particular had a pronounced dome and not only did it sound like a thunder clap when a car passed over it but it also slewed the car sideways.
