Rindt race to Ickx
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) HOCKENHEIM (West Germany). Belgium’s J. Ickx raced away with the Jochen Rindt Memorial race, leading the field from start to finish in his Ferrari 312. Run in fine weather and watched by a crowd estimated by track officials at 70,000, the race covered 35 laps—a distance of 147.6 miles—and attracted a score of the world’s leading Formula One drivers. Ickx was never seriously challenged, and his nearest rival, Sweden’s R. Peterson in a March-Ford, finished nearly a minute behind his time of Ihr lOmin 11.7 sec. The Belgian’s over-all average speed of 126.2 m.p.h. included a lap record of Imin 58.8 sec at an average speed of 128.14 m.p.h. The British drive., J. Surtees, finished third in a Ford Cosmos, 23sec behind Peterson, and 15sec ahead of the fourth-placed New Zealander, H. Ganley, driving a B.R.M. The race does not count towards the world championship, in which ’ckx lies second behind the Scotsman, J. Stewart.
Basketballs—The Waimea College girls basketball team beat Mairehau (Christchurch). 20-13, in the Zone 6 final at Westport during the week-end and will now play in the finals in Auckland in August.
